Status in doubt for season opener
After undergoing offseason left ankle surgery, Finney-Smith still hasn't been cleared for contact and appears to be doubtful for Opening Night. The veteran forward should play meaningful minutes for the Rockets when healthy, so his absence should create more playing time for Tari Eason in the frontcourt. Jae'Sean Tate and Josh Okogie also have a chance to carve out a role in the early going.

Likely to sign contract extension
Durant was traded to Houston on June 22, with the team aiming to be a title contender during the 2025-26 campaign. Along with the superstar forward getting a chance at another fresh start, he can see himself committing to the team long-term. "I do see myself signing a contract extension. I can't tell you exactly when it'll happen but I do see it happening." The two-time NBA champion is coming off another strong season, as he played in 62 regular-season games, averaging 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 blocks per game, shooting 52.7 percent from the floor and 43 percent from three-point range.

Suffers torn ACL
VanVleet struggled with efficiency during his second season in Houston, but the Rockets' win-loss record with him on the court (41-19) spoke volumes about his overall impact on the team. With VanVleet sidelined, the runway is clear for Reed Sheppard, who barely had a role as a rookie after being selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Amen Thompson could also handle a ton of ball-handling responsibilities in VanVleet's absence, but Aaron Holiday is the only other true point guard on the roster currently.
